It’s that time of year isn’t it? We’ve had the snow, biting winds, and a tsunami of rain all of which have conspired to prevent us attending our favourite place of worship and to start paying homage to a dimpled white ball and the varying directions it flies off in. Some of you will have been further hampered by the fear of having to wear “fashionable golfing items” that our loved ones so thoughtfully gifted us in December!!
Yes I know, there are some real stalwarts out there, who have been playing ever since
the last warm day of 2009 in protective garments designed for the SAS looking for BinLaden at the North Pole, but most of us haven’t and so this is our belated start to the golfing year.
So …. Let’s bid farewell to the Old You, the long-struggling hacker whose handicap moves at the speed of Tiger woods driving his car from his mansion in the early hours. Iwant you to pop the cork on a bottle of Champagne (or pour some lemonade into your white zinfandel … times are tough.) The new you is almost here, metaphorically born at midnight, January 1.
If you’re like most everyday players, your golf game has probably stalled. You play and practice yet never get better. I feel your pain. I’ve improved a lot over recent years and now revisiting single figures. When I stop twitching on the greens, I’ll do some real damage. I’m living proof that good golf is not about talent. It’s about marrying hard work with some sound advice. Mind you, it was Henry Longhurst who said “ They say that practice makes perfect. Of course it doesn’t for the vast majority of golfers it merely consolidates imperfection.
The Golf Doctor is here to assist with your floundering motivation and hopefully deliver the prognosis which will leave you better informed and start the healing process. I will also be providing reviews of the Somerset Golf courses, the latest equipment, offering advice and taking an irreverent look at this wonderful game we all …… love ?
I’ll even try to interview Natalie Gulbis …… but only for the good of this column you understand..
Remember, don’t be downhearted, all those who brag that they can consistently hit it 300 yards off the tee .. are lying and probably trying to compensate for something else !!
