A Curious Word Puzzle
Assuming that Smith and Jones had taken an examination in the use of the verb “had,” the sentence might be punctuated and paraphrased as follows: “Smith, where Jones had used the phrase ‘had had,’ had used the word ‘had’; the phrase ‘had had’ had received the examiner’s approval.” Therefore, proper punctuation would be as follows: “Smith, where Jones had had ‘had had,’ had had ‘had’; ‘had had’ had had the examiner’s approval.”
